If you are an adrenaline junkie, Bentota is your playground. Thanks to its unique geography, a calm, flat river on one side and the rolling Indian Ocean on the other, Bentota is widely considered the best place in Sri Lanka for water sports. It is one of the few places in the world where you can windsurf on glass-flat water in the morning and surf ocean waves in the afternoon, all within a 5-minute walk. Whether you want to scream on a fast boat or glide silently through the mangroves, there is something for everyone. Here is our ranking of the Top 7 Water Sports you must try.
Jet Skiing: The Need for Speed
This is the crowd favorite. You don't need any experience to hop on a high-powered Jet Ski and zoom across the Bentota River. The water here is usually very calm, allowing you to reach top speeds without bouncing around too much.
- Difficulty: Easy (Beginner friendly).
- Best Location: The main Bentota River (near the bridge).
- Pro Tip: Ask an instructor to ride with you if it's your first time they know the river limits and safety zones.

The Banana Boat Ride: Group Fun
Traveling with family or a group of friends? The Banana Boat is non-negotiable. You all sit on a long, yellow, inflatable tube which is pulled by a speed boat. The goal? Try not to fall off! (Spoiler: The driver will try to flip you into the water at the end).
- Difficulty: Easy (Fun for kids and adults).
- Fun Factor: 10/10.
Windsurfing: Harness the Elements
Bentota is famous in the professional watersports community for Windsurfing. The river offers flat water (perfect for learning balance), while the ocean side offers wind and waves for experts. Many international competitions are held here.
- Difficulty: Hard (Requires lessons).
- Best Time: November to April (when the water is calmest) or May to October (for high wind).

Water Skiing & Wakeboarding
If you have good balance, this is the ultimate cool factor. Because the Bentota River is so wide and flat, it acts like a mirror, making it one of the best places in Asia to learn to ski.
- Difficulty: Medium/Hard.
- Tip: If you struggle with two skis (Water Skiing), try Wakeboarding (one board, like snowboarding), it’s often easier to stand up!

The "Sofa" or Tube Ride
If the Banana boat sounds too intense, try the Sofa Ride. It’s exactly what it sounds like an inflatable couch pulled by a boat. You sit back, hold on, and bounce over the waves. It’s fast and bumpy, but you are less likely to fall in.
- Difficulty: Very Easy.
Canoeing & Kayaking: The Silent Option Not everyone wants a loud engine. Renting a canoe or kayak allows you to paddle slowly into the smaller mangrove creeks where the big boats can't go. This is pure therapy. You can hear the birds, spot monitor lizards, and get a workout at your own pace.
- Difficulty: Easy/Medium (Depends on how far you paddle!).
- Best Location: The mangrove tunnels south of the main bridge.
Ocean Surfing: Catch a Wave
While the river is for flat-water sports, the beach is for surfing. The waves near Bentota Beach (and nearby Hikkaduwa) are great for beginners. There are plenty of surf schools on the sand that will rent you a board and push you into your first wave.
- Difficulty: Medium.
- Best Location: Bentota Beach or Moragalla Beach.
Recovery: The "Sports Massage"
After a day of holding onto ropes, balancing on boards, and paddling, your muscles are going to scream tomorrow. This is where Ayurveda comes in. Many local wellness centers offer specific oil treatments designed for muscle recovery. An Abhyanga (Full Body Oil Massage) or a Pinda Sweda (Herbal Pouch Massage) will drain the lactic acid from your muscles and stop the stiffness before it starts. Don't let soreness ruin the next day of your trip! [Link: View Spa & Massage Options]
