Best Spots to Watch the Sunset in Bentota (A Golden Hour Guide)

On the west coast of Sri Lanka, the sunset isn't just a time of day; it’s an event. Because Bentota faces directly west into the vast Indian Ocean, we are blessed with some of the most spectacular light shows on the planet. Every evening around 6:00 PM, the sky turns into a canvas of purple, orange, and fire-red. Locals stop their cricket games, fishermen park their boats, and tourists flock to the water's edge. But where is the absolute best place to watch it? It depends on whether you want crashing waves, river silence, or a dramatic rock formation. Here are the top 5 sunset spots in Bentota.

The Classic: The Bentota "Spit" (Sandbar)

This is the most famous spot in town. The "Spit" is the narrow strip of sand at the very north end of Bentota Beach where the river flows into the sea. Why it’s special: You get a 360-degree view. On your right, the calm river reflects the sky like a mirror. On your left, the ocean waves are crashing. It is wide, open, and usually has a nice breeze. Photo Tip: Walk all the way to the end of the sand. Capture the contrast between the dark river water and the foamy white ocean waves under the orange light.

The Hidden Gem: Moragalla Beach & Crow Island

Just across the bridge in Beruwala (a 5-minute tuk-tuk ride from Bentota) lies Moragalla Beach. It is quieter than the main beach and has a unique geographical feature: Crow Island. Why it’s special: Crow Island is a rocky outcrop covered in green trees just off the shore. As the sun sets behind it, it creates a dramatic, dark silhouette. The water here is also shallower, creating beautiful reflections on the wet sand at low tide. Photo Tip: Frame the setting sun directly behind the island to create a "halo" effect.

The Riverside: Gardens & The Bridge

Not all sunsets need sand. The river offers a completely different mood. Why it’s special: Many resorts in Bentota have gardens that overlook the river. Watching the sunset here is peaceful. You don't hear the roar of the waves; you hear the birds settling down for the night. The water turns into liquid gold, and you can watch the silhouette of the catamaran boats gliding home. Alternatively, walk up to the Aluthgama Bridge. From the top, you get a high vantage point looking down the river toward the ocean, arguably the best panoramic view in town.

The Lighthouse View: Beruwala Lighthouse

If you are willing to take a 10-minute boat ride, head towards the Barberyn Lighthouse (Beruwala Lighthouse) on the island offshore. Why it’s special: It is one of the few functional lighthouses in Sri Lanka you can visit. Seeing the white tropical lighthouse glowing pink in the fading light is a photographer's dream. Even if you view it from the mainland beach, it adds a stunning focal point to your pictures.

Inland: Kande Viharaya Silhouette

For a unique angle, look inland. From many high points in Bentota, you can see the giant seated Buddha of Kande Viharaya rising above the trees. Why it’s special: As the sun goes down, the temple lights turn on. Capturing the massive statue against a twilight blue sky is a spiritual and beautiful way to end the day.

Practical Tips for the "Golden Hour"

The Time: Sri Lanka is close to the equator, so the sunset time doesn't change much. It is almost always between 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM year-round.

The Speed: The sun drops fast. Once it touches the horizon, it’s gone in 5 minutes. Be ready with your camera by 5:45 PM.

The Clouds: Don't be sad if it's cloudy! The best colors often happen 10 minutes after the sun has set, when the clouds light up in pink and violet.
